 ABOUT OUR BREEDING PHILOSOPHY

At Argos Shetland Sheepdogs we strive to produce happy healthy family members.  Our breeding dogs are provided age appropriate testing: OFA for hips (minimum age 24 months); CERF; thyroid (minimum age 1 year); and vWD (or clear by parentage).  Please visit our girl’s page to see each dam and her testing status.  We breed each and every litter with the thought that our next champion could come from that litter; so the utmost research, thought and care goes into planning the breeding before it ever takes place.  We take into consideration temperament, type/cross faults, health/genetic testing and pedigree. Our goal is to produce beautiful well-tempered dogs that can exceed as show dogs, performance dogs or as pretty pets.

We maintain a waiting list for pet puppies.  You may ask to be placed on a waiting list for a specific color/sex or specific litter.  Availability is based on those already on the wait list, whether we have a pet quality puppy available and whether the puppy available will fit well with your household.  We will not take a deposit until the litter is on the ground, we anticipate a puppy will be available, and until you have read and signed our sales contract.  The sales contract is an agreement between both parties, which places in writing the health “warranty”, spay/neuter requirements and additional care requirements including our lifetime return policy.

Each puppy is socialized from the day they are born.  Puppies are whelped in our living room and remain there until they start walking and need more room, at that time they are moved to an exercise pen with puppy play toys.  We handle our puppies on a daily basis from the time they are born.  They are exposed to different environments throughout their time with us.  We take them outside as soon as the weather permits and they are old enough to begin the housebreaking process.

I have been showing dogs in obedience and conformation for over 20 years.  Although I am currently a oncology nurse, my previous employment history includes: scheduler & working the after-hours emergency clinic at the MSU veterinary school; veterinary assistant; kennel supervisor; working at a breeding terrier kennel and worked as a dog groomer.  I have taught both basic obedience and puppy socialization classes in the past.

If you are interested in a puppy from Argos Shetland Sheepdogs, please provide me information about yourself, family, living situation and what you are looking for in a Shetland Sheepdog at vanbur15@msu.edu .
